Going green seems to be hot topic at the moment, with everyone urged to be more conscious about our environment and how our day-to-day tasks can have an effect on its future resources.
However, according to a new survey by advisory body, Envirowise, there is |
|
a double standard amongst environmentally friendly employees.
Seven out of 10 of the 1,800 workers surveyed, said that they were more proactive when it came to being green at home. A third of those admitted that when at work, they disregarded any environmentally friendly issues and took no action to reduce office waste.
A third of the respondents said its workplace had no clear environment policies, which was an excuse not to adopt a green practice, while 59% admitted that if companies made a more visible effort it would encourage more green behaviour.
Getting staff on board is a key issue when trying to adopt a green attitude. In this week’s Caterer, as part of its Green Month, it offers advice on how to get staff on board.
Programmes director of HCIMA, Linda Grants highlights some tips, including:
- Lead by example – if senior managers don’t lead by example, any results will be wasted.
- Look at job roles and what they involve so you can see exactly where improvement can be made.
- Keep staff motivated and inspire them. Recognising achievement and measuring performance can help as can adopting a green “champion”.
