Junior DEFRA minister Lord Rooker has dashed industry hopes that an 80% advance could be made on 2007 single farm payments to ease cash flow problems caused by livestock movement restrictions. Farmers’ groups issued a joint statement expressing their extreme disappointment to the news.

Meanwhile, DEFRA has lifted foot-and-mouth disease movement restrictions in most parts of the country. However, bluetongue movement controls remain firmly in place.

DEFRA lifts foot and mouth disease movement restrictions outside the risk area, but bluetongue restrictions remain in place.

Conservation set-aside proposal in the pipeline
The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust has proposed that farmers should have the option of putting a minimum of 1% of their farm area into a new "conservation set-aside" scheme that would pay £500/ha.
