22 October 2007 FWi WEEKLY ARABLE ALERT
   Editors's Comment

Editor: Paul SpackmanAfter such a soggy summer it’s a relief to have had some decent weather to get new season crops in and pre-emergence sprays applied. Winter cereal drilling is almost complete in many areas – in England at least - although crops are by no means racing away – see FWi’s Crop Watch for the latest.

With many growers – here and abroad – planting more wheat due to better prices, it is perhaps not surprising to hear reports this week that “massive world demand” has caused 34.5% domestic ammonium nitrate prices to jump to £175/t.

Elsewhere, DEFRA plans to launch a quota buy-up (form of outgoers) scheme has prompted an angry response from British Sugar and the NFU, as it is likely the scheme would be scrapped before it is ever implemented!

Kind regards,
Paul Spackman
